Recording your drums will be your foundation for learning about your own drum sounds ,microphone placement, mixing and more also don't be afraid to use other sounds on your recording if their available like, samples, synthesizer, any added percussion if it's available and yes your vocals don't be afraid to make it all your own and best of all you'll have a finished drum demo or full length LP.(There is no limit)If you would rather have other musicians on the demo by all means do so.It's your demo so take charge this will also help build your credibility as a drummer/musician and give you a sense of professionalism.
It can sound pretty daunting at first I know I was there to not too long ago but thru determination and banging my head against the wall it started to become clear and make some sense after a while and trust me the rewards are worth all the trouble . Let's start with the basics and what you will need to get started a computer with monitor etc a sound interface card ,microphones and we will assume that you already have the instruments The price of a PC or MAC will vary go with at least a G4 MAC and make it a Pentiem 4 PC you'll need extra RAM at least a giga bite windows 2k as far as recording software they all pretty much do the same thing these days go with your wallet or trust your gut I use SONAR 3 and I am comfortable with that sequencing software price is around $380.00. The sound card interface is the go between the microphones ,keys, guitar, drums etc.. and your computer generaly using USB or a firewire interface M-audio ,Tascam ,MOTU make excellent products that price anywhere from $200.00 to $800.00 each you may look these products up on the internet and go to your music store and ask questions they don't charge anything for that and there mic preamps are all quality. The mic preamp is very important you want almost no noise between the Mic and computer and a good preamp will also warmup the quality.Luckly there are some great affordable microphones out there AKG , RODE ,SURE prices range start at $100.00 and up to $8000.00 each .So the price range to get your studio started sofar is up around $1600.00 this is enough to keep you going for a long time before any upgrade but be careful that you don't get the bug and keep spending your money unless of course you have the funds to do so. If you've done any professional recording before you can spend this amount within 2 to 3 sessions and remember in someone else's studio you are at the mercy of the engineer always watching the clock and if you make a mistake you run into overtime . Sometimes in my studio if I make a mistake it will lead to another recording idea so you can see where a full length CD in a studio can run in the thousands of dollars so I say invest in yourself and learn to record and write .you can always record for others as well ,drum loops are more and more popular these days and there is money to be made recording your own loops for other people,as well as sessions ,TV,Internet, and so on so invest in yourself .Again this will all be covered in your private lesson in the project studio . We will go into further details in the future with open forums and chat rooms that will be setup to answer questions and problems that will arise from time to time and find solutions together.
