Proper practice techniques to optimize your time
People ask me what is the best way to practice and my response is always the same. You must first ask yourself what kind of drummer do you aspire to be? Do you have a drum hero (you should) is it Jazz that gets you pumped or Cuban rhythms maybe Rock,R&B which ever style spins your wheels learn as much about it as possible and find a drum hero you can relate to that keeps you inspired, play to your favorite records and remember to always challenge yourself this will keep increasing your musical center. The learning bug is interesting once you get it it's difficult to stop because the emotional rewards and achievements keep you wanting more.I would also suggest listening to other forms of music in a new approach and try emulating the style as best as you can this will not only make you a better drummer but help you develop your own unique style of drumming and that is what will get you noticed.Let's face it if you sound like Ringo guess what the producer will go out and get Ringo for the session .So be your own sound and more gigs will come your way and better ones as you keep developing your drumming style. You'll see that if you are just starting out keep your practice time to less than a hour a day and take that time to build on the basics as you improve your skill your practice time should also increase.I also believe if you practice using drum silencers on your kit you will be able to practice for a much longer time the theory here is that volume will tier you after a few hours not to mention your neighbors. Also please avoid being a professional student do take formal instruction and do all that your teacher tells you and work hard but also play to your favorite records come up with your own drum grooves, fills, and lessons and challenge yourself at all times and if your not happy with your current drum teacher find another one. One last thing on practicing keep it fun and always challenge yourself this will help keep it interesting and if you find it fun and interesting you will always practice and grow as a drummer and musician.
